Fore-Edge Painting: Watercolor Lion

Updated: May 22, 2024

The pages of a book tell a story, but can they form a bigger picture? Author Alice Abyss uses a press, watercolors, and ink to create art on fore-edges.

Beloved Readers,

I am happy to announce that I finished my most recent artwork: a watercolor and ink fore-edge painting. This lion represents the ruthlessness of Africa.

The Book: African Myths & Tales: Epic Tales (Gothic Fantasy) (Hardcover)

mythology books

ISBN: 9781787552883

ISBN-10: 1787552888

Publisher: Flame Tree Collections

Publication Date: June 24th, 2019

Pages: 480

Language: English

Series: Gothic Fantasy

At 480 pages, African Myths & Tales is the widest fore-edge I’ve painted yet. It is a high-quality edition. I bought this copy from one of my favorite independent bookstores: Quail Ridge Books in North Carolina. Their store is quaint and beautiful. From this link, you may order it anywhere in the United States and only pay the cost of media mail shipping. Quail Ridge Books also carry my novel, Pharmakides.

Fore-Edge Painting

I used a fanned method and pressed the pages. The medium is watercolor and ink.

Cool Undertones

We all recognize lions as big golden cats. However, when it came time to paint the cream colored pages, I dappled the background with cool undertones. Teal and purple did the trick. This is noticeable on the nose and in the mane.

Warm Colors

Of course, lions are warm-colored creatures. This amber cat required on yellows and oranges, with a cool purple and teal underneath.

The Process

I started with the darkest part. I had a faint pencil outline and dropped the pupil in bold watercolor to start the painting. The eye is the energetic vortex of the painting.
